According to Nikkei News, Rapidus, which undertakes the task of R&D and industrialization of advanced process semiconductor technology in Japan, is planning to deepen cooperation with IBM to expand more converging interests beyond technology licensing.

According to the report, the visiting Minister of Economy and Industry Nishimura and Secretary of Commerce Raymond of the United States will jointly listen to the report on the cooperation plan between IBM and Rapidus on the morning of January 5 local time (early morning of January 6 Japanese time). The main content is said to focus on the downstream product application of the 2nm process, or it is proposed that Rapidus is responsible for manufacturing the processors in IBM high-performance computers. At present, the processors designed by IBM are mainly provided by Samsung.

Rapidus was founded in August 2022 and funded by eight Japanese companies, including Toyota and NTT, with the full support of the national authorities. The company's goal is to achieve mass production of 2nm semiconductor based on IBM technology process.
