Following Intel's announcement of a strategic partnership with MediaTek, two more semiconductor giants, Qualcomm and Samsung, have officially announced their cooperation. However, the former's cooperation is mainly focused on foundry (Intel foundries chips for MediaTek), while the latter's cooperation is mainly in the field of intellectual property.

On July 28, local time, Qualcomm, the global IC design leader, announced that it has strengthened its strategic partnership with Samsung Electronics and agreed to extend the patent licensing agreement until the end of 2030. Previously, Qualcomm and Samsung had reached a patent licensing agreement in February 2018 for a period of five years, including mobile devices and other areas.

It is reported that Qualcomm this extension of the licensing patents include 3G, 4G, 5G and the upcoming 6G mobile technology. In addition, Qualcomm Technologies (a subsidiary of Qualcomm) will also extend its cooperation with Samsung, whose Snapdragon platform will support Samsung's future flagship Galaxy products, including smartphones, PCs, tablets and extended reality.

As we all know, Qualcomm and Samsung occupy the leading position in the field of mobile chips and smartphones respectively. Qualcomm, the world's top-ranked IC design vendor, benefited from the growth performance of cell phone, automotive, IoT, and RF front-end businesses, and its fiscal third quarter results once again achieved double growth in revenue and net profit.

According to Qualcomm on July 28 announced the results of the third fiscal quarter ended June 30. Data show that under GAAP, Qualcomm achieved revenue of $10.93 billion for the quarter, up 36% year-on-year; net profit of $3.73 billion, up 84% year-on-year; non-GAAP net profit of $3.356 billion, up 53% year-on-year.

In terms of business-specific revenue, the smartphone business contributed more than half of Qualcomm's revenue in the fiscal third quarter. During the period, its semiconductor business unit's revenue from the smartphone business was $6.149 billion, up 59 percent year-on-year. It is reported that Qualcomm's downstream customers include Apple, Samsung and other smartphone giants.

Meanwhile, Qualcomm's revenue from the automotive and IoT businesses also achieved rapid growth, amounting to $350 million and $1.833 billion, respectively, up 38 percent and 31 percent year-on-year. In addition, revenue from the RF front-end business was $1.046 billion, up 9 percent year-on-year.

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said the extended technology licensing agreement with Samsung, the world's largest smartphone maker, will help ensure revenue stability in its licensing business.
