According to foreign media reports, Intel recently responded to the sudden termination of the Pathfinder project.
The company said that the decision to terminate Pathfinder for RISC-V had no impact on Intel OEM Service (IFS) or the Horse Creek platform cooperated with SiFive. The company is still committed to supporting chips on all three major instruction sets (x86, Arm and RISC-V). The experience gained from this project will help consolidate the company's commitment to promoting RISC-V specifications and building a robust RISC-V software ecosystem.
Intel also said that Pathfinder is an "innovation project" of an internal team, but did not disclose the specific number of employees of the team.
Public information shows that Intel has other RISC-V projects in progress. Recently, Intel and SiFive have just jointly released the HiFive Pro P550 RISC-V development board, which is expected to be launched this summer. This motherboard is powered by the Horse Creek processor manufactured by Intel foundry service (IFS) using Intel 4 technology. Intel also jointly invested with Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) to build a $426 million laboratory to develop RISC-V processors for future Z-class supercomputing, AI accelerators, autonomous vehicle and high-performance computing.
