On July 13, Bosch Technology Day was held at the Dresden Wafer Works in Germany, where Bosch presented the semiconductor production technologies currently at the group's disposal as well as its future production plans.

Bosch announced that it will invest 3 billion euros in chip production by 2026 as part of a dedicated program in the field of microelectronics and communications technology under the Important for the Common Good Europe program.

Bosch said in the statement that the company will invest 170 million euros in a new development center in Germany and 250 million euros in expanding its wafer fab in Dresden. Bosch will also explore the use of gallium nitride to make chips, which can reduce power loss by four times compared with traditional silicon-based power chips.

Bosch is also optimizing and improving its microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) for the consumer goods industry. To strengthen Bosch's leadership in MEMS technology, we will manufacture MEMS sensors on 12-inch wafers, which are expected to come on stream in 2026, and the new fab will give us the opportunity for mass production, which Bosch will certainly take advantage of.

In addition, another focus of Bosch is the production of new semiconductors. According to the report, Bosch has been mass-producing silicon carbide (SiC) chips for use in power electronics in electric and hybrid vehicles at its Reutlingen plant since the end of 2021. In order to make power electronics less expensive and more efficient, Bosch is exploring the use of other types of chips, for example, Bosch is developing gallium nitride chips that can be applied to electric vehicles. However, the Bosch Group said that before being used in cars, gallium nitride chips must become more robust and be able to withstand high voltages of 1,200 volts.

According to Reuters, Bosch CEO Halten said, "In 2022, there are many things that will ease, but there will still be bottlenecks in 2023. If demand falls due to a possible recession, individual industries may need fewer chips ...... But you can't use that to develop a strategy.
